APIES RIVER REHABILITATION

A large section of the Apies in the north of Pretoria flood each year, due to development upstream that increases the frequency and severity of floods. While working at Habitat Landscape Architects, we did a proposal for rehabilitating about 3km of the river.

This included rehabilitation of the river bed and banks with environmentally friendly measures such as eco-logs, gabions and planting, protecting infrastructure such as power pylons, and re-introducing natural vegetation and removing alien invasive vegetation.

The intention was that it could become a large public park as well, with hiking trails, fishing spots and bird hides.
